WooCommerce UX & Product Engineering
Some store problems aren’t hosting or code quality. They’re behavior: a checkout that asks too much, a product page that makes choosing a variation hard, an admin screen that hides what went wrong. We engineer those interactions inside WooCommerce, for shoppers and for the team running the store.
What UX & Product Engineering Covers
The interactions we rebuild most often, on the storefront and behind it.
- Checkout flow design. Field order, conditional fields and fewer steps, on the block-based or the classic checkout
- Product page interactions. One-click variation selection, bundles and configurators that stay fast on a phone
- Validation before fulfillment. Address and order details checked while the customer is still on the page, before mistakes become support tickets
- Scheduling at checkout. Pickup and delivery time slots chosen as part of the order, not arranged by email afterwards
- Merchant-facing UX. Settings screens and admin notices for your own team, or for merchants using a plugin you distribute
- Speed as part of the experience. Page weight and load time on product and checkout pages treated as UX work, not a separate project
How We Build It
Six principles that turn UX ideas into WooCommerce behavior that lasts.
Behavior Before Pixels
We start from what the store does at each step, including its states, rules and errors, and fix behavior first. A new coat of paint rarely fixes a checkout.
Fewer Decisions per Screen
Every field, option and step has to earn its place. Grouping, sensible defaults and progressive disclosure keep checkout short without losing the data your operations need.
Agree the Measure First
Before we build, we agree what success looks like, such as checkout completion, support tickets or delivery errors, and we check it again after launch.
Mobile Is the Default
Layouts, tap targets and page weight are designed for phones first and tested on them; desktop gets the enhancements, not the other way round.
Admin Screens Are UX Too
Settings, notices and errors are designed for the people who run the store, so a failed connection says what to do next instead of failing silently.
Built on WooCommerce, Not Around It
Changes use WooCommerce’s checkout and product APIs instead of overriding templates wholesale, so payment, shipping and other extensions keep working alongside them.
Planning a full redesign rather than targeted fixes? That’s our WooCommerce Website Development service. The rules behind every change are in our engineering standards.
Proof: When UX Fixes Show Up in the Numbers
Yoco’s WooCommerce payments plugin, taken over from another agency and fixed from the merchant’s side of the screen.
Yoco launched its WooCommerce payments plugin in August 2023 through another agency. It was unstable, hard to diagnose and confusing for merchants to set up. After an in-depth code review we added clear admin notices for connection problems and unreachable webhooks, a logging system support could actually use, and correct order-status handling.
None of that is visual design. All of it is user experience, and within three to four months it moved the numbers Yoco cared about most.
86%
merchant conversion rate after the fixes shipped
90%
fewer weekly support tickets, from 30–50 down to fewer than 5
75%
faster ticket resolution, from 5–7 days to 1–2 days
“Partnering with Progressus has been a game-changer for us. Their deep expertise in WooCommerce and WordPress, combined with their responsive and reliable support, has drastically transformed our plugin for the better.”
“We’ve seen dramatic improvements in merchant satisfaction and our support ticket volume has decreased significantly. Working with Progressus feels like we’ve extended our web development team with true experts.”

Frequently Asked Questions
What is WooCommerce UX engineering?
It’s changing how a store behaves for shoppers and staff, including checkout steps, product interactions, validation and admin screens, with code that sits inside WooCommerce. It’s the layer between a design mockup and a store that converts.
Do you redesign the whole store?
Not unless it needs it. Most UX work is targeted: one flow, one page type or one admin screen. For a full rebuild, see WooCommerce Website Development.
Can you customize the block-based checkout?
Yes. We work with both the block-based checkout and the classic checkout, and recommend one based on the extensions your store depends on, since not every extension supports blocks yet.
Do you do the visual design too?
Our focus is interaction and behavior. We work within your existing brand and theme, or alongside your designer, and keep every change consistent with the rest of the store.
Will custom checkout changes break when WooCommerce updates?
They shouldn’t, because they’re built on WooCommerce’s APIs and hooks rather than replaced templates. And when WooCommerce does change something, the team that built them updates them.
How is a UX engineering project priced?
As a fixed quote after scoping, based on the number of flows, page types and integrations involved, not an hourly meter. Projects start at €2,500. You approve a written scope before we build.
Is Your Checkout Losing Orders It Shouldn't?
Tell us where customers or your team get stuck. You'll get a plain answer about what's involved and what it should cost.
What happens next
- Show us where people get stuck today. A call, an email or a screen recording is enough to start.
- We map the flow step by step and agree how success will be measured.
- You get a written scope and a fixed quote (projects start at €2,500), or a straight answer if an existing plugin does the job.
